There are actors and actresses who get the major roles and there are those who don’t. There are the actors and actresses who refuse major roles, and then there are the ones who get kicked out of them. Landing the job and then getting fired from it must be the hardest thing in the world. But it happens to all of them. Apparently even movie stars.

Lovely Bones – Ryan Gosling

The part of Jack Salmon, the grieving father in Lovely Bones was originally meant to be played by Ryan Gosling. Ryan worked hard to look the part by gaining 60 pounds and this he did by drinking melted Haagen Daz ice cream. Regardless of this delicious way of gaining weight, the director Peter Jackson was far from impressed. Apparently the actor and director had two different perceptions of the character and in the end, Ryan Gosling was replaced by Mark Wahlberg.

Her – Samantha Morton

The voice of the operation system was originally cast as Samantha Morton and she finished the entire film as well. However, filmmaker Spike Jonze spotted that everything was not right about her role during post production and replaced Samantha with Scarlett Johannson who worked with Joaquin Phoenix, the actor playing the recently divorced man to get the part just right.

Knocked up – Anne Hathaway

It was Anne Hathaway who was originally cast in the role of Alison Scott, a reporter who gets pregnant after a one night stand. However, Anne had an issue with the scene of giving birth at the end of the movie and she thought it was too graphic. However, Judd Apatow was adamant and let Anne go, replacing her with Katherine Heigl.

Transformers – Megan Fox

Fox who starred in Transformers and Transformers 2, lost her part in Transformers 3 by comparing director Michael Bay to Hitler during an interview. Steven Spielberg who is known to be extremely sympathetic towards victims of the holocaust did not find this entertaining and immediately fired her from the movie.

X-Men – Dougray Scott

It was Russell Crowe who was intended to play the role of Wolverine in X-Men but Dougray Scott had to be looked at due to the fact that Crowe’s salary demands were a little too high. But Doughray had to back out of the film since his schedule was clashing with Mission: Impossible II. In the end, a then relatively unknown Hugh Jackman was cast in the role which paved the way for his grand success in the movie world.

American Psycho – Christian Bale

So Christian Bale DID stare in American Psycho, so how come he was fired? Well as it turns out, he actually was fired from the production originally. After offering him the role, the studio promptly fired him to pursue Leonardo DiCaprio for the role. Having failed at landing DiCaprio, they went after Ewan McGregor and at the failure of landing him for the role, went back to Christian Bale to be cast in the role once again.

Lord of the Rings – Stuart Townsend

After getting trained in swordsmanship and combat for two whole months following his casted as Aragorn in Lord of the Rings, Townsend was fired just one day before the filming and replaced by Viggo Mortensen. The reason? He looked much too young for the role.

V for Vendetta – James Purefoy

6 weeks into the filming of the movie, James Purefoy complained that he cannot wear the mask during the entire film. This did not go down as well as he had planned and Hugo Weaving ended up replacing him in the film.
